Foresta’s journey began in 1934 when John Foresta started selling fresh produce out of his truck on the north side of Phoenixville. Soon after, he expanded his operation to include buying and processing hogs from his home on St. Mary’s Street. This success led to the opening of a slaughterhouse, Foresta’s Abattoir, at the corner of Bridge Street and Pothouse.
World War II food rationing forced the slaughterhouse to close, and after being sold, the property remained unused for nearly 20 years. In 1974, the Foresta family revitalized the market at its current location, growing it into the beloved institution it is today.
