From Skeptic to Superfan: The 25th Annual Phoenixville Blobfest
As someone who once regarded the Phoenixville Blobfest with a healthy dose of skepticism, I am here to admit that I was wrong. What I initially thought was a niche, overhyped local event has since become one of my favorite annual traditions. The 25th Annual Blobfest, held from July 11 to 14, promises to be the most spectacular yet, and if you’ve never attended, this might just be the year to see what all the fuss is about.
Blobfest Eve: A Nostalgic Kickoff
The festivities begin on July 11 with Blobfest Eve, featuring a special screening of the iconic movie musical Grease. This nod to nostalgia is fitting, given that Grease includes a scene at a drive-in theater playing The Blob. It’s a clever way to set the stage for the weekend, blending classic Americana with the unique sci-fi horror charm that defines Blobfest.
The Main Event: Stage Show and Run Out
On July 12, the festival officially kicks off with the Blobfest 2024 Stage Show and Run Out. I must admit, it was this part of the festival that first won me over. The energy is electric as Baltimore-based horror host Aurora Gorealis of Shocktail Hour leads the charge with live music by Beach Creeper. The highlight, of course, is the re-enactment of The Blob’s famous ‘run-out’ scene. Seeing hundreds of people flee the Colonial Theatre in playful terror is a sight to behold and a true community bonding moment.
After the run-out, the fun doesn’t stop. Guests are invited back into the theater for the Blob Ball, an after-party hosted by LuLu Boutique & Gifterie. This event is a blast from the past, with live music and attendees dressed in their best 1950s attire, dancing the night away.
A Full Weekend of Festivities
The festival continues through the weekend with an array of activities that celebrate both the film and the local culture. On July 13, participants can enjoy live performances, special engagements, and tours that dive deep into the history of sci-fi horror.
The final day, July 14, kicks off with the 7th Annual Blobfest 5k, 10k, and Half Marathon, hosted by RUNegades. As a runner, this event has a special place in my heart. It’s a fantastic way to support the historic Colonial Theatre, which gained fame from its appearance in The Blob. This year, the addition of a half marathon makes it even more exciting.
After the races, the festival concludes with screenings of The Blob, its 1972 sequel Beware! The Blob, and the 1954 classic Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3D. These screenings, accompanied by live riffs from Matt McGinnis, Joel Hodgson, and Emily Marsh, provide a perfect end to a weekend filled with thrills and nostalgia.
Blobfest has won me over with its unique blend of community spirit, nostalgia, and pure fun. If you’re skeptical like I was, give it a chance this year. You might find yourself becoming a fan of this quirky, delightful celebration. For more information and tickets to the 25th annual Blobfest, visit The Colonial Theatre.
